Susan O. Martin, Esq.
Executive Vice President of Litigation Management/Loss Control

Susan brings her clinical and physician practice management expertise as EVP of Litigation Management/Loss Control. In her position, she oversees the claims and risk department, which includes four claims attorneys, a paralegal, an administrative assistant and an RN compliance manager. Susan and her team provide practice risk assessments as well as advice and guidance in professional liability claims. Her leadership skills, combined with her background in litigation and clinical risk management, are an asset to our members. She provides consultation on risk activities for all insureds, as well as a review of policies and risk reduction/mitigation practices for new physicians in private practice.

Prior to joining AMS Management in 2007, Susan served as Chief Legal Counsel for a physician-management group consisting of primary care, multi-specialists and ED physicians. Prior to that, she managed litigation and risk management for EmCare, a large, national physician practice management company. She has also been in private practice defending physicians in lawsuits, as well as handling regulatory matters and insurance coverage issues. Before becoming an attorney, Susan worked many years as an emergency department nurse manager in busy trauma centers across the North Texas area, including Parkland Memorial Hospital, while training new nurses and teaching paramedic courses. She has been a nationally recognized speaker on EMTALA and professional liability issues. She authors articles, as requested, for a national publication, ED Legal Letter.

Susan graduated from Texas Wesleyan School of Law in 1995. She is a member of the Texas Bar Association, health law and insurance sections; a past member of the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management; National Health Lawyers Association; and past President of the Texas Chapter of The American Association of Nurse Attorneys (TAANA).
