Susan O. Martin, RN, JD

Executive Vice President of Litigation Management/Loss Control 

Since 2007, Susan has brought her clinical and physician practice management expertise to the company.  Susan currently manages the claims department which includes a staff of three attorneys, administrative assistant and an RN compliance manager. Her leadership skills and experience in managing litigation for health care providers, as well as her operational background in clinical risk management and physician practice management services strengthens the claims department’s relationship and risk initiatives with our the insured practitioners.   Susan and her attorney staff provide practice and clinical risk assessments as well as expertise in professional liability litigation.  Susan provides consultations as to managing and responding to patient complaints, managing claims prior to litigation, and overall risk education and other risk  services to physician groups and their office staff. 

Prior to joining AMS Management, she was Chief Legal Counsel for a physician management group consisting of primary care, multi-specialists and ED physicians. Prior to her role as Chief Counsel, Susan managed litigation and risk management for a large, national physician practice management company (EmCare). She has also been in private practice defending physicians in lawsuits, as well as handling regulatory matters and insurance coverage issues.  Before becoming an attorney, Susan worked many years as an emergency department nurse manager in busy trauma centers across the North Texas area, including Parkland Memorial Hospital. She is a nationally recognized speaker on EMTALA and professional liability issues.

Susan graduated from Texas Wesleyan School of Law in 1995. She is a member of the Texas Bar Association; a past member of the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management and National Health Lawyers Association; and past President of the Texas Chapter of The American Association of Nurse Attorneys (TAANA).
